This showdown will take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is the third time Canelo will defend his undisputed status. For Charlo, it's his first 168-pound fight. Alvarez vs Charlo Odds
Alvarez is the favorite, but not by as much as you'd think. He sits at -400 odds to win the fight outright. Charlo comes back at +300. These two have never faced off before, but Charlo has voiced he's been aiming for a chance to take on one of the best to ever do it.
Can Canelo Get it Done?
Alvarez is truly elite. The 33-year-old owns an impressive 59-2-2 record in his decorated career, notching 39 knockouts in the process. However, Canelo even admitted himself that his last two fights haven't been as convincing as usual, winning by unanimous decision against Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder. Prior to that, he actually lost to Dmitry Bivol in a light heavyweight title bout, just one of his two defeats ever.
While some may believe Alvarez has lost a step, that's hard to believe just because he lost to Bivol, a bigger, heavier, and taller opponent who has never succumbed to defeat. It was just a bit too tall of a task for the Mexican at the time.
Yes, 33 isn't exactly young, but there's a reason Canelo has defended his super middleweight belts three times. He is really that good. Plus, Alvarez said he wasn't at his best because of some minor injury concerns. The veteran insists he's now ready to roll. This is a clear opportunity to prove that he's still one of the brightest superstars in the sport. Canelo is an all-around great fighter who is a top-notch counterpuncher and can adapt to any type of style depending on what his opponent brings to the table. Charlo should be a legitimate test for him.
Charlo's Opportunity
Most of the boxing world expected Jermell's twin brother Jermall to be the one fighting Canelo but instead, Jermell stepped up to the table and made it his mission to secure this bout with Alvarez. The Houston, Texas native is 35-1-1 in his career with 19 knockouts. At 33, this is easily the biggest fight of his career. If he's able to win, he'll forever be remembered as the guy who handed Canelo a defeat.
Charlo hasn't lost in his last five fights, defending his light middleweight titles in three consecutive bouts. Charlo settled for a draw with Brian Castano in 2021 before knocking him out in their rematch last year in Los Angeles. Knowing just how important this fight is, you better believe the best version of Charlo will show up in Las Vegas.
The light middleweight champ is an extremely talented fighter. He's capable of putting his opponent on the canvas in a hurry but he's also really quick with his hands and can outbox anyone. Charlo is always looking to land a KO blow but he's content with wearing down his oppositions with body shots, too. There's not really any position where Charlo is uncomfortable. If you pin him in the corner, he'll fight his way out. Canelo has a difficult test here against a determined fighter with all the motivation in the world.
While some may be worried that Charlo is jumping up a whole two weight classes (he's usually at super-welter), he's actually pretty large. Charlo is six feet while Canelo is just 5 foot 8 and also has a 73-inch reach compared to only 70.5 for Alvarez. He's got a good chance in this fight.
Canelo Alvarez vs Jermell Charlo Picks
I honestly think Charlo will give Canelo a serious run for his money on September 30th. However, Alvarez's experience in big fights will prove to be the difference-maker and will help him secure the win while defending his belts one more time. Expect this bout to go the distance. Take Canelo to win via unanimous decision when that bet becomes available closer to fight night.
