Santa Anita Breeders' Cup

Santa Anita has become synonymous with the Breeders’ Cup. It has held the end-of-year championships of Thoroughbred horse racing a record 11 times, first in 1986 and most recently in 2023. With plenty of space for spectators, a gorgeous mountain backdrop, and great weather all year long, it is an ideal location for the Breeders’ Cup.

Perhaps the most exciting moment in Breeders’ Cup history, the mare Zenyatta rallying to become the first and only female horse to beat the boys in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, happened at Santa Anita in 2009. Another thrilling moment, the nose photo finish between Beholder and Songbird in the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Distaff, also happened at Santa Anita. Wise Dan, a fan favorite who won the 2012 and 2013 editions of the Breeders’ Cup Mile en route to Horse of the Year honors both years, won both of his Breeders’ Cup Mile editions at Santa Anita.

Santa Anita is also the home of the most colossal upset in Breeders’ Cup History. Arcangues, a French horse who had never raced on the dirt, was a 133-1 shot in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. But, under Hall of Fame rider Jerry Bailey, Arcangues made a powerful closing move to win by two lengths, looking far more like a favorite than a triple-digit surprise.

Santa Anita History

Santa Anita has been open since Christmas Day of 1934. The Santa Anita Handicap, known as the Hundred-Grander back in that day because it was the first $100,000 horse race in America, was run for the first time the next year, and has been consistently run except for a stint during World War II, between 1942 and 1945, when racing was suspended at the track.

Some of the most popular features of Santa Anita have been added over the years of its history. The downhill turf course was added in 1953. In the 1960s the track was renovated, and Santa Anita added a fall meet in 1969 after Del Mar stopped running at that time of year. In 1984, Santa Anita hosted a top-class horse event unrelated to racing: it was the home of the equestrian events for the 1984 Olympics! In 2014, Santa Anita extended its racing season even further after the closure of Hollywood Park, stretching out to its winter, spring, and fall season that we see today.
