2025 NASCAR Xfinity Series Picks: Take Justin Allgaier to repeat

NASCAR’s Xfinity Series will experience some changes leading into the 2025 season, mirroring developments in the Cup Series.

Along with a new director, the Xfinity Series will showcase a fresh wave of young talent while seeking a new title sponsor.

Xfinity will conclude its 11-year association as the junior series at the end of this season but will continue collaborating with NASCAR on various initiatives and maintain its sponsorship of the 23XI Racing team.

On the track, Justin Allgaier, the 2024 Xfinity Series champion, is entering the new season as the frontrunner for the 2025 Xfinity Championship. He is closely followed by competitors Austin Hill, Connor Zilisch, Sheldon Creed, and Sam Mayer.

Below are the drivers considered top contenders for the 2025 NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship, along with their statistics from the 2024 Cup Series season:

Justin Allgaier

The 2024 Xfinity Series season came to a spectacular conclusion as Justin Allgaier achieved his long-awaited first Xfinity Championship after 15 seasons competing in the series.

Since the introduction of the 12-driver Playoff format in 2016, Allgaier has qualified for the Championship Race (Final 4) six times in eight years, including three consecutive appearances.

He has consistently finished in the Top 7 of the driver standings for 14 straight years. He has 2 outright wins, 10 top-5 finishes, 20 top-10 finishes in his career.

This Championship marked the sixth for JR Motorsports and owner Dale Earnhardt Jr., making it the fifth consecutive year in which a first-time champion was crowned. Allgaier will return to defend his title, aiming to become the first driver to do so since Austin Cindric in 2021.

With 25 career wins, the defending champion is poised to extend his impressive streak of at least one victory per season to nine years. At 38 years old, there’s every reason to believe this seasoned driver will remain a strong contender for another Championship.

Austin Hill

Austin Hill has accumulated 4 career wins, 11 top-5 finishes, and 20 top-10 finishes. As he enters his 7th season in the Xfinity Series, this marks his 4th year competing full-time.

Last season, Hill led the series with four victories and finished fourth overall. He was among the Final Four drivers and showcased impressive performances throughout the season.

While Hill may not grab the spotlight like some of his competitors, his consistency makes him a formidable presence on the track. Only John Nemechek has outperformed him in wins over the past two years, with Nemechek securing seven wins in 2023.

Driving the #21 car, Hill is the leader for Richard Childress Racing. He is joined by talented teammate Jesse Love, who finished 8th last season and was named Rookie of the Year.

I anticipate a strong showing for this RCR duo in the 2025 season. They will surpass their combined total of five wins from last year, possibly reaching seven or eight.

Additionally, I expect both drivers to qualify for the Playoffs for the second consecutive year.

With Hill's ability to excel at superspeedways, he is almost assured a spot in the postseason. Will this finally be the year he takes a significant leap and captures the Xfinity Series Championship?

Sam Mayer

He boasts a career record of 3 wins, 8 top-5 finishes, and 1 top-10 finish. As previously mentioned, Sam Mayer will drive for the Haas Factory Team after parting ways with JR Motorsports, where he spent three years and achieved seven wins.

Mayer’s standout season came in 2023, where he secured four victories and finished third overall.

However, he faced a setback last year, ending the season in 9th place with a disappointing average finish of 18.0 despite clinching three wins. His performance metrics were generally lower compared to his breakout year in 2023.

Now, Mayer faces the challenge of regaining his 2023 momentum while adapting to a new team, a significant endeavor given the competitiveness of the current field.

At just 21 years old, Mayer is a capable driver with ample opportunity for growth and the potential to become a champion in Xfinity. The real question is whether he can achieve it this year.

Harrison Burton

Harrison Burton has achieved one career victory, along with one top-5 finish and two top-10 finishes.

After three full years in the Cup Series, he will return to the Xfinity Series, where he will race for AM Racing. This marks his first full-time stint in the Xfinity Series since 2021.

It was a surprise when Burton was let go by the Woods Brothers in favor of Josh Berry. Despite this, Burton managed to secure his first career Cup Series win and qualified for the Playoffs, finishing 16th overall—an impressive feat for someone just 24 years old.

One of the standout moments of the 2024 Cup Series season was his victory at Daytona last August. He overtook Kyle Busch at the finish line while his father, Jeff Burton, provided commentary.

It was a powerful and emotional moment, reminiscent of when Darrell Waltrip announced his brother Michael Waltrip's Daytona 500 victory. Unfortunately, that race also marked the loss of the legendary Dale Earnhardt Sr., but that's a different story.

In his 75 races in the Xfinity Series, Burton has recorded four wins, with his best finishes being 8th overall in both 2020 and 2021—his final years before moving up to the Cup Series.

AM Racing focused on recruiting Cup Series drivers during the latter half of last season, having parted ways with their previous driver, Hailie Deegan.

If the team can deliver a car with competitive speeds with the top contenders, I believe Burton could succeed in Xfinity this year.

His three years of valuable experience racing against elite drivers give him a significant advantage over the younger talent in the series.
