It’s a new era in South Beach as Tata Martino mysteriously departed upon the conclusion of the last season. After Inter Miami unceremoniously bowed out of the MLS Cup Playoffs in the very first round to Atlanta United, Martino and Inter Miami “parted ways.” It remains unclear if the decision was truly mutual, but now Javier Mascherano is now in charge at Chase Stadium. And along with him has come a whole new coaching staff.
The coaching department is not the only personnel area that has undergone major revisions for the 2025 season. Facundo Farias, Nicolas Freire, Matias Rojas, and Diego Gomez have all left, being replaced by Fafa Picault, Gonzalo Lujan, Tadeo Allende, Rocco Rios Novo and Telasco Segovia. Such a massive overhaul of both players and coaches will inevitably cause some initial growing pains, and it remains to be seen if any of it will be marked improvement.
After all, it’s hard to beat a record-breaking season like they had last year. Messi and Suarez are only getting older, and with four different competitions to play for in 2025, Mascherano will be tasked with expertly rotating his crew. Managing fatigue will arguably be more important than game-by-game tactics.
I made a habit of fading Inter Miami last season, which resulted in a mixed bag. I think 2025 will be the year we can really start to profit off of Inter Miami’s overrated status in the betting market.
Exciting New Changes for Charlotte FC in 2025
Boasting one of the more boisterous supporters’ groups in the MLS, Charlotte FC made a good show of themselves in 2024. The Crowns earned a fight-placed finish in the Eastern Conference but bowed out of the playoffs in the first round to Orlando City. In an attempt to improve upon their finishing position, Charlotte has made some acquisitions over the winter break.
The biggest of those signings was Wilfried Zaha. The 32-year-old former Crystal Palace winger arrives in Charlotte by way of Turkey. Loaned out by Galatasaray, English manager Dean Smith hopes to implement Zaha’s pace on the flanks and boost their offensive production, a sore spot for the club last term. Indeed, their 46-goal tally was seventh-fewest in the league, but they conceded the second-fewest.
Additionally, Charlotte acquired Eryk Williamson in the midfield from the Portland Timbers. If they can maintain their watertight backline, bolstered by the extraordinary efforts of Kristijan Kahlina, a top-3 finish is not out of the question. It is tough to beat this team at home, so Inter Miami will want to take advantage of their home field before the more difficult reverse fixture later this fall.
MLS Best Bets: Inter Miami vs Charlotte Prediction
Inter Miami have duties to attend to this week, playing Jamaican side Cavalier in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Mascherano will undoubtedly look to rest many of his starters, but that game is still very important, especially considering it is their home leg of the Round of 16. That means Inter Miami are at a disadvantage compared to Charlotte, who come in on 8 days’ rest. The Herons will be on just 3 days’ rest.
Charlotte was a very difficult team to score on last season, rarely losing by more than one goal. As a standalone match on Sunday afternoon, there will be plenty of anticipation amongst Charlotte players, let alone in a matchup with Messi. Last time these two sides met, Charlotte earned a draw against Miami at Chase Stadium. In fact, in their four meetings since Messi arrived at South Beach, Charlotte has earned two draws and a win.
My projections make Inter Miami (+118) favorites, a far cry from their current line. I would make the spread -0.25 at that price, so we are getting a full goal of value compared to the betting market. There is plenty of value that I would consider recommending a larger wager than normal.
