Letā€™s delve into the badminton betting picks for the last 16 of the Malaysia Open and try and find some value in the markets.

  • What? 2025 Malaysia Open Badminton Last 16
  • Where? Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur
  • When? Wednesday, January 8, 2025

Alex Lanier vs. Kunlavut Vitidsarn

Below are the odds for the match from three of the best sports betting sites.

Alex Lanier+195+200+200
Kunlavut Vitidsarn-290-260-260
Alex Lanier +6.5-120-120-120
Kunlavut Vitidsarn -6.5-120-120-120
Over 79.5-120-120-120
Under 79.5-120-120-120

Vitidsarn had a great 2024, climbing the BWF rankings up to number five. He won the Korea Masters in November, losing just one game in the process. Vitidsarn could be described as a flat track bully as he dominates opponents below his rank but struggles against those above and around it. This was shown at the recent China Masters and World Tour Finals when he was well beaten by Jonatan Christie and Yu Qi Shi. Thereā€™s no shame in losing to such illustrious players, currently the world number 3 and 1. Vitidsarn should ease past Lanier.

Chia Hao Lee vs. Anthony Ginting

I am backing Ginting to cover the 7.5 game spread as I think this offers reasonable value. Leeā€™s recent record has more red than green on it. He did well to reach the Final of Septemberā€™s Korea Open but apart from that, he had a quiet second half of the year.

Ginting is a solid player who usually makes the latter stages of tournaments. He does, however, need to improve on his most recent couple of outings where he was eliminated in the first round of both the Arctic Open and The Denmark Open.

Anthony Ginting -7.5 To beat Chia Hao Lee

Kean Yew Loh vs. Koki Watanabe

This is one of the best ties of the round as world number 13 faces world number 11. I include this pick as I think backing Watanabe as an underdog is a good value bet. He is ranked higher than his opponent and has been in impressive form for some time. Back in July, he won the Canada Open. In October, he reached the final of the Denmark Open, before losing to Anders Antonsen in the final.

Loh has lost his last three matches and is seemingly out of match practice having only played twice since October.

Christo Popov vs. Kodai Naraoka

Naraoka is one of the worldā€™s best players. The 23 year old, world number eight can beat anyone on his day as he proved at the World Tour Finals when he beat the number one player 2-0. I am backing him to cover the 7.5 point spread against world number 25, Christo Popov.

Kodai Naraoka-7.5 To beat Christo Popov

Tzu Wei Wang vs. Anders Antonsen

This might be the banker of the round. I expect the formidable Antonsen to dispatch Wang with ease. Antonsen had an outstanding 2024, winning back-to-back tournaments in Denmark and China recently and he shows no sign of slowing down going into the New Year. Wang is an inconsistent player. I expect this to be extremely comfortable.

Anders Antonsen-9.5 To beat Tzu Wei Wang
