Defending champion Jannik Sinner is the +150 betting favorite to retain his men's singles title at the 2025 Australian Open. In order to do so, the Italian player and world No. 1 in the ATP ranking will need to become the first player not named Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer to defend an Australian Open men's singles title in a quarter-century.

Sinner Coming Off Dominant Year
Sinner completed his climb to the top of the men's tennis world in 2024. Along with leading his homeland to a Davis Cup title, the Italian star would also win two of the four men's tennis Grand Slam singles titles, the Australian and US Opens. He's the first player from Italy to ever be ranked No. 1 in the world.
Overall, Sinner won eight titles and went 73-6 in matches. But prior to last year's win, his best showing in the Australian Open was a quarter-final appearance in 2022. And he needed all five sets to overcome Daniil Medvedev in last year's Australian Open final.
Alcaraz Looking To Rebound
Slowed by injury, Alcaraz won just four titles last year, his worst season in three years. However, the Spaniard won 50% of his tournaments in Grand Slam events. He won at Wimbledon and the French Open.

Alcaraz and Sinner are on opposite sides of the draw. These two top players have never met in a Grand Slam final. For Alcaraz, his best Australian Open appearance came last year. He reached the quarter-finals.
What Does Djokovic Have Left In The Tank?
At 37, Djokovic is nearing the end of the line as an elite player. Even so, last year he was able to reach the finals at Wimbledon and win the Olympic gold medal.

The Joker is in Melbourne with fellow Grand Slam winner Andy Murray now operating as his coach. Djokovic has won 10 of the last 13 titles in this event. He's one Grand Slam win away from an outright record of 25 titles.
It makes for a compelling story. But the draw was not kind to Djokovic. Should the form charts hold, he'll need to overome Alcaraz (quarter-finals), Zverev (semifinals) and Sinner (final). That could prove a tall order.
Is It Zverev's Time?
It was Zverev who toppled Alcaraz in last year's Australian Open quarter-finals. The German player, currently ranked second by the ATP, was making his second Aussie Open semifinal appearance. He also got to the final four in 2020. However, he's yet to play in the final.
In fact, for all his talent, Zverev remains without a Grand Slam title on his resume. He was a losing finalist at the French Open (2024) and US Open (2020).
Australian Open Men's Singles Longshot Bets
Daniil Medvedev (+1400) won the first two sets of last year's final against Sinner, then dropped the next three. His game suits the hard courts of Melbourne well. He's played in the final in this tournament in three of the past four years. He may need someone else to help him out. though. Medvedev is 1-8 all-time in matches against Sinner.
American Taylor Fritz (+2800) is another player whose game fits well to the Aussie Open hard courts. It took him all the way to his first Grand Slam final at last year's US Open. But Fritz is 1-4 facing Sinner, so like Medvedev, may need fate to intervene to get him an opportunity in Melbourne.
Alex de Minaur (+5000), No. 9 in the world, is the highest-ranked Australian player. An Aussie hasn't played in the final of this event since Lleyton Hewitt in 2005. And de Minaur has never gone past the Round of 16 in his previous Australian Open appearances.
And The Winner Is . . .
Medvedev was arriving in Melbourne late following the arrival of his second child. Some might view that as a distraction. We see it as motivation.
The Russian has reached the final here three times, twice going five sets. But he's fallen at the final hurdle on each occasion, including last year's loss to Sinner. Medvedev is coming off his first year without a title since 2017. He'll be fired up to get 2025 off to a winning start, and we're taking him to finally clear that final hurdle in the Australian Open picks.
