  • What: 2024 end-of-year rugby union internationals
  • Who: England vs. New Zealand
  • Where: Twickenham Stadium, London, England
  • When: Saturday, November 2nd
  • Time: 10.10 a.m ET

England start their 2024/25 international season with one of the toughest tests in rugby union, a match against the mighty All Blacks.

The match at Twickenham will be the third time the two nations have met in 2024. Steve Borthwick’s England team toured New Zealand in July, losing two Test matches against Scott Robertson’s team.

In the 1st Test, England lost a close encounter 16-15. Borthwick’s England did lead 15-10 early in the 2nd half, but the hosts wore them down in a grueling second period, slotting over two penalties to seal the win.

Moving onto the 2nd Test match, and England started well and led 14-13 at half-time. But again, the All Blacks finished more strongly, eventually running out 24-17 winners with 11 unanswered points in the last 30 minutes of the match deciding the contest in favor of the hosts.

England will have the home-field advantage this time around and will be looking to make that count.

England

England is the No.5 team in World Rugby’s official world rankings. That puts them behind Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, and France.

Basically, there are four stand-out nations in the world, and England is the best of the rest. Steve Borthwick’s job is to get England competitive again within that group of nations.

The 2024 Autumn Internationals (as the fixtures are known in the northern hemisphere) offers Borthwick the chance to continue his rebuilding program.

His England team is in transition after making it to the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup, eventually finishing third. They were also very unlucky not to make the final, with South Africa needing a 78th-minute penalty to get over the line.

But the reality of the World Cup was that England overachieved. The draw was kind to them, and the weather conditions on the semi-final day leveled the playing field somewhat.

Overall, England was miles behind the top four in the world.

The rebuild started in the 2024 Six Nations, but England failed to convince, eventually finishing third in the table. A home win over Ireland was the highlight of the campaign.

The next stage of the process is the autumn internationals, starting with New Zealand. After the match against the All Blacks, England will face Australia, South Africa, and Japan.

Wins over the Aussies and Japan are demanded. On top of that, Borthwick is expected to beat at least one of the All Blacks or South Africa.

New Zealand

The All Blacks have just endured a miserable 2024 Rugby Championship that saw them finish in second place behind winners South Africa.

Furthermore, New Zealand lost three matches of the six, with a record 38-30 home defeat to Argentina the low point in the competition.

Two defeats on the road to South Africa can be excused. But All Black fans will expect to see the tables turned when it’s New Zealand’s turn to host the Springboks in back-to-back fixtures in 2025.

The autumn tour of the northern hemisphere is set to be very testing for the All Blacks. They start with a match away to Japan which they are expected to win at a canter. But after their warm-up match in Yokohama, things get serious.

A visit to Twickenham to face England gets the ball rolling in Europe. That is followed by matches against Ireland and France before they end the tour away to Italy.

England vs. New Zealand betting picks

Twickenham has traditionally been a hard place for opposing teams to come and win.
In recent years, it has become a touch less daunting. But as World No.1 ranked Ireland can testify, when England raise their game, they can beat anybody on home soil.

There isn’t much to choose between England and New Zealand. But given this is England’s first fixture of the season, we think they won't be sharp enough to beat an All Blacks team that has just defeated Australia twice in the Bledisloe Cup and had a nice warm-up match in Japan.

New Zealand to win and cover the spread is our betting pick.
