Verstappen extends Drivers' Championship lead in Austin

Max Verstappen took a huge step towards securing the 2024 Drivers’ Championship with a third-place finish at the US Grand Prix and a win in Saturday’s Sprint race at Austin.

As a result of his improved performances, the triple-world champion extended his lead over Lando Norris in the Drivers’ Championship by five points.

Verstappen went into the weekend with a 52-point advantage. But after Norris could only manage third place in Saturday’s Sprint race, and fourth place in Sunday’s Grand Prix, Verstappen (354 points) now leads Norris (297) by 57 points.

In the betting to win the Drivers’ Championship, Verstappen is now -450, with Norris second at +300.

There are still plenty more twists to come in this battle and it’s still far from a done deal for the defending champion.

Ferrari in the hunt to win the Constructors’ Championship

Elsewhere, Charles Leclerc led Carlos Sainz home in a one-two finish for Ferrari. The dominant performance of the Italian team has shaken up the betting for winning the Constructors’ Championship.

Having been -1400 going into the race at Austin, McLaren now find themselves at -800. Ferrari is now the second-favorite at +550, with Red Bull down at +1600. McLaren leads the championship with 544 points. Red Bull is second on 504 points, with Ferrari just eight behind on 496.

Both Leclerc and Sainz are scoring points every week for Ferrari. Red Bull is relying on Verstappen alone. It now looks inevitable that Ferrari will finish above Red Bull, and they also look like the only team who can prevent McLaren from winning the title.

The next race is from the AutĂłdromo Hermanos RodrĂguez circuit in Mexico City. Will the two Ferrari cars carry on from where they left off in Austin? Or will McLaren fight back after a disappointing weekend in the US?

Three-way betting split

Having three favorites is a significant shift in the Mexico betting from the race odds in Austin last week.

Ahead of the US Grand Prix, Lando Norris was the +100 betting favorite. These odds came off the back of the McLaren driver’s stunning 20-second win over the second-placed Max Verstappen in the previous race in Singapore.

Now, after his disappointing fourth place in the US, Norris has seen his odds drift.

On the flip side, Max Verstappen has seen his odds shorten. The Red Bull No.1 was +450 to win in Austin at the start of race week. His car was much improved from its sluggish performance in the previous race in Singapore.

Furthermore, we know that Max Verstappen will be fighting to the very end to defend his world title. The Dutchman had to dig deep and use all his experience to see off the challenge of Lando Norris in Austin.

Verstappen’s defensive performance in finishing third ahead of the Brit in the US Grand Prix may have just clinched his fourth successive world title.

Also in the mix to win in Mexico is Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari No.1 driver was +650 at the beginning of race week in the US. Those odds look silly after he coasted to victory on Sunday.

Our 2024 Mexican Grand Prix betting picks

Ferrari dominated the US Grand Prix. They were given a helping hand by Norris and Verstappen nearly taking each other out at the first corner. In the confusion, Charles Leclerc nipped through the gap into first place and never looked back.

Despite the helping hand, McLaren quickly pointed out that they wouldn’t have been able to live with the pace of the two Ferrari cars last Sunday.

So with the excellent form of Ferrari, along with Norris and Verstappen seeming to be focusing on each other, a bet on either Ferrari (+160) to win the race in Mexico is the best wager.
