History of America & Chivas
Club America and Guadalajara, colloquially known as “Chivas,” have a long-standing rivalry in Mexico. It all started in the 1940s and continued throughout the next few decades as the two clubs competed with virtually no other competition in Mexico. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the domination of America and Chivas slowed down and there was a semblance of parity in Mexican soccer. That decade witnessed La Bronca del ‘83, a riot between the two teams that broke out in the second leg of the league semi-finals.
Chivas is famous for not recruiting any foreign players, instead electing to grow talent exclusively from Mexico. This policy was not in place from the beginning, but has since been implemented and successful in developing many international players, including Javier Hernandez and Carlos Vela.
Neither club has ever been relegated from the top flight of Mexico, although Guadalajara came close multiple times in their “Dark Era.” In 1970-71 and 1981-82, Chivas came within a game of relegation but managed to stay afloat. A fun fact about this fixture is it is the only derby in the world to be showcased in two different continental tournaments, the Copa Libertadores (South America) and the CONCACAF Champions Cup (North America).
Why is Club America 12th on the Table?
Club America has had a rough summer compared to their standards. Typically associated with triumphant victory in practically any competition they participate in, Club America crashed out of the Leagues Cup in uncharacteristic fashion last month. Back-to-back defeats in their return to domestic action have caused significant concern in Mexico City. A 1-0 home loss to Puebla was arguably more worrying than their 4-1 away defeat to Cruz Azul, one of Liga MX’s top teams this season.
It has been the stagnant offense holding Club America back. Besides their 4-goal allowance to Cruz Azul last game, Club America had conceded multiple goals just once in seven consecutive games, excluding friendlies. America has now scored just once in their last three games and have looked very unimaginative in the final third. A rivalry match could give them a boost in motivation, but so too could their finishing jitters.
Guadalajara Contending for Apertura Title
Chivas currently sits 6th on the table with 11 points. They have lost just once this season in Liga MX, a 4-2 away defeat to 4th-ranked Club Tijuana. Half of their games have resulted in clean sheets as well. The club is coming off a monstrous 5-0 victory against lowly Juarez, a week after earning points on the road against Tigres UANL. A result on Saturday could go a long way towards clinching a top playoff spot in Apertura this year.
Despite their strong run of form in Mexico, their participation in the Leagues Cup did not result in similar outcomes. Two penalty shootouts left them with just 2 points, not enough to advance out of their group. Such a finish is quite unfortunate for a club that earned results in both games, although one could expect more from a team playing in favorable territory against the San Jose Earthquakes. What that does mean, however, is that Chivas are unbeaten in their last 6 matches across all competitions.
America & Chivas Breakdown and Free Betting Pick
I believe the value in this game is in the home team. While I am inclined to bet on Club America’s over 1.5 team total instead of the moneyline, I hesitate for multiple reasons. Firstly, Club America has clearly struggled offensively in recent weeks. This cannot be understated. Also, the past three meetings between these two sides have seen just one goal, all of whom took place in 2024.
A contentious, cagey battle between two rivals is very likely in the cards this weekend. Therefore, I will stick to a simple, straight moneyline wager on Club America to claim the victory and get back on track. In fact, a small stab on Correct Score: 1-0 could be sharp in a potential repeat scoreline of their May match at Estadio Azteca.
In their last seven meetings, Chivas has only won once. That includes 3-0 and 4-0 wins for America, both home and away, within the last year. There is a lot of recency bias playing into this line. I have America projected (-141), so I like the value on them to win at (-108), but for no more than a half unit given the slim margins.
