The 2024 British Grand Prix is the last of three back-to-back races following on from Spain and Austria.

The race is taking place at the iconic Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire, the same venue that hosted the first-ever Grand Prix back in 1950.

Max Verstappen won here in 2023. The 2023 edition was also the race that saw the beginning of McLaren’s climb back to the top of Formula 1, with Lando Norris finishing second and Oscar Piastri finishing fourth.

A year on and McLaren are now going head-to-head with Red Bull every week. And this battle looks set to continue at Silverstone this weekend.

The current situation

Max Verstappen extended his lead at the top of the 2024 Drivers’ Championship with a fifth-place finish at the Austrian Grand Prix. But that doesn’t begin to tell the story of what happened at the Red Bull Ring last Sunday.

Max Verstappen had a comfortable lead in the race. But a poor pit stop by Red Bull saw the championship leader leaving the pits just ahead of the McLaren of Lando Norris.

The young Brit was now within DRS range, and after numerous attempts at overtaking Verstappen, the inevitable happened and the two cars made contact.

The result saw damage to both cars. Verstappen managed to complete the race, finishing fifth. Lando Norris recorded a DNF. Therefore, Verstappen extended his lead at the top of the table by ten points.

Max Verstappen now sits on 237 points, Lando Norris on 156. In the betting to win the Drivers’ Championship, Verstappen is -1400, and Norris is +800.

Who is the favorite to win the 2024 British Grand Prix?

Ahead of Round 10 in Spain, Max Verstappen was -225, and Lando Norris was +500. Before Round 11 in Austria, Verstappen was -188 and Norris was +300. Going into the British Grand Prix, Max Verstappen is the favorite at -170, and Lando Norris is +250.

The betting is getting closer every week. And on the track, the gap is now almost non-existent.

Behind the leading two is Oscar Piastri at +1000. The McLaren No.2 driver is followed by George Russell at +1600, Lewis Hamilton at +1800, and Charles Leclerc at +2500.

Can Verstappen continue to hold off the challenge of Norris?

We backed the field to beat Max Verstappen in two of the last three races. In Canada, we lost. In Austria, we won.

Okay, Max Verstappen is still finding ways to win. But the facts are that he no longer has the safety net of a 20-second buffer ahead of himself and the field. We are now beginning to see Lando Norris challenge him every week.

It’s only a matter of time before Norris learns how to beat Verstappen. The speed is there. At the moment, it looks like it’s only the know-how that is missing.

Verstappen also now knows that mistakes by him and his Red Bull team will be punished.

Last Sunday, not only did Red Bull make a mess of a pit stop that put them under pressure, but they also failed to notice that Lando Norris had a five-second time penalty for track limit violations.

Had they picked up on that quicker, they could have instructed Verstappen to let Norris pass, knowing he only had to finish within five seconds of the Brit to win the race.

As it turned out, Verstappen’s lead in the championship grew as Norris recorded a DNF. But it could have turned out very differently on another day. And it was all avoidable.
