The hectic European leg of the 2024 F1 season

The 2024 Spanish Grand Prix is Round 10 of the 2024 season. The race marks the start of the European leg of the season, with seven races in total taking place on the continent across June, July, August, and September.

After Spain, there are visits to Austria, Britain, Hungary and Belgium. There is then a four-week break which is followed by the Dutch and Italian Grand Prixs.

Max Verstappen heads to Spain with a win under his belt. But his win in Canada was essentially down to a mistake made by McLaren who didnā€™t immediately pit Lando Norris when the safety car was deployed.

The moment of hesitation by McLaren gave Verstappen - who had been comfortably passed by Norris earlier in the race - the opportunity to pit immediately and undercut his rival. When Norris finally did pit, he returned to the race in third place. The mistake was a costly one.

In fairness to Verstappen, it was almost a role reversal of what happened in Miami, when McLaren similarly took advantage, a race that Norris won.

But the underlying facts are that Verstappen and Red Bull are not cantering to the title this season.

McLaren is strong, Ferrari - who had a stinker in Montreal - is also competitive, and we also witnessed a Mercedes revival in Canada.

So might we see four teams with a chance of winning races throughout the rest of the season? Letā€™s hope so.

Who is the favorite to win the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix?

Max Verstappen is the favorite to win the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix at -225. Two weeks ago in Canada, he was -200.

Second in the betting is Lando Norris at +500, with Charles Leclerc third at +750.

Behind the leading three contenders is Carlos Sainz at +2000. Then we have George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, and Oscar Piastri all at +2500. Sergio Perez is +2800 and Fernando Alonso is +10000.

The improved performance of Russell (3rd) and Hamilton (4th) in Montreal has seen their odds shorten for this race. They were at odds of +8000 (Russell) and +6600 (Hamilton) to win the Canadian Grand Prix.

So even though the bookmakers still have the Mercedes duo in the group of drivers just outside the favorites, there has been a massive reduction in their odds of winning the race.

Betting to win the 2024 Driversā€™ Championship

Max Verstappen was -1200 to win the 2024 Driversā€™ Championship ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix. After his sixth win of the season in Canada, Verstappen is -2000.

Following his Canadian horror show, Charles Leclerc has seen his odds drift from +800 to +1400. He is still the second favorite.

Lando Norris has been cut from +1800 to +1600. The Brit's odds have slightly shortened after another impressive performance in Canada.

In the latest Formula 1 betting online odds, Charles Leclerc is +110 in the betting to win the championship without Verstappen. Lando Norris is +120.

Weā€™ve said it before, and weā€™ll say it again, Norris looks the more reliable of the two.

Our 2024 Spanish Grand Prix betting picks

First up for our picks, we are first looking at the winner of the pole position.

If the rumors are to be believed, Ferrari has accelerated their upgrades after their Montreal debacle. Should we believe this? Or should we expect them to have an immediate impact if true?

If this is true and they do have an immediate impact, the +900 on Charles Leclerc and +1600 on Carlos Sainz to finish in pole position will soon disappear.

We are backing both for our first Spanish Grand Prix betting picks.

Carlos Sainz To be on Pole Position

+1600

For our race winner, we are tempted to also go for either of the Ferraris. But whilst they might be able to perform well enough over one lap to win the pole position, can they be trusted to do it for the whole race?

With these doubts in mind, we are going with Lando Norris to win the Spanish Grand Prix at +500. He will be fuming about Canada and determined to make amends. And his team dare not make any more silly mistakes like they did in Montreal.
