Lando Norris is now a serious threat to Verstappen

It now looks official. Max Verstappen isnā€™t going to have things all his own way in 2024.

After two years of simply having to get around the circuit to win, Max Verstappen now has serious competition from the McLaren of Lando Norris.

First, the British driver defeated Verstappen for his maiden Grand Prix win in Miami. And to prove it was no fluke, Norris finished second to Verstappen in Round 7 at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix last Sunday.

You may be thinking, so what, Norris came second. It was another win for Verstappen, so whatā€™s the problem?

And thatā€™s a fair point. But Norris was reeling Verstappen in at the end of the Emilia Romagna race, with the Dutchman only winning by less than a second. If the race had gone on another couple of laps, Norris may well have recorded back-to-back wins.

The bigger picture now is that Red Bull finally has a team putting them under pressure. The upshot is they now canā€™t afford any mistakes, adding a lot of pressure onto the team and its collective decision-making across the remainder of the season.

Who is the favorite to win the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix?

The short answer is Max Verstappen is the favorite at -150 to win the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix.

But as weā€™ve just pointed out, he is no longer guaranteed the win by merely completing the race. The odds back this up. Ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, Verstappen was -700 to win the race. The F1 betting landscape has now changed.

Second in the betting to win at Monaco this weekend is Lando Norris at +400 with BetUS (he is +550 at BetOnline). BetOnline has Leclerc slightly ahead of the Brit in the betting. These odds could change, though, as it would appear that money is coming in for Norris again.

For the record, Charles Leclerc is +500 with both BetOnline and BetUS. The fourth favorite is Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren. Piastri is +1200 to win the Monaco Grand Prix.

Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz are both +1400. And check this out: Lewis Hamilton and George Russell are both at +6600, the same odds as Fernando Alonso.

Betting to win the 2024 Driversā€™ Championship

Despite the emergence of Lando Norris as a serious threat to Max Verstappen, the latest Formula 1 betting online odds on Verstappen to win the 2024 Driversā€™ Championship are still -10000.

The Dutchman has amassed 161 points in the standings. His closest rivals are Charles Leclerc on 113 points, Sergio Perez on 107, and Lando Norris on 101.

The 60-point lead over Norris is having an impact on the odds. Norris is available at +4000, and Leclerc is at +5000. Might they be worth a small wager at those prices?

Our 2024 Monaco Grand Prix betting picks

The pole position is of vital importance at the Monaco Grand Prix. The tight, winding Monte Carlo roads make overtaking very difficult on this road circuit, and if Verstappen can tie up pole position, it would make beating him very difficult.

To claim pole, Verstappen is +140, with Norris and Leclerc both at +300. Verstappen is on a record run of eight consecutive poles. Surely, that is due to come to an end soon?

No one knows these roads better than Charles Leclerc, and he is in good form at the moment.

As weā€™ve already mentioned, Red Bull knows they canā€™t afford any mistakes. If they are not in pole position on Sunday, then itā€™s game on this weekend. But even if Verstappen does make the pole, the team has to get their pitstop and tire strategies spot on. Any mistakes are now likely to be punished.

With Norris and Leclerc both in with a live chance this weekend, we are backing the field to beat Max Verstappen at +120 with BetOnline.
