The 2023 Solheim Cup officially gets underway this week as Team Europe and Team USA go to battle before the Ryder Cup next week. This event will take place at the Finca Cortesin in Andalucia, Spain from September 22nd to 24th. There are 12 players in each squad and no shortage of success amongst the 24 participants. In fact, 16 of them have won on the LPGA Tour since the 2021 Solheim Cup. Also, nine of those players have combined for a total of 13 wins this season alone. Solheim Cup Preview
Team Europe is a deserving favorite with some of the best players in the world leading the way. Celine Butler and Charley Hull are both ranked within the top-10, while Georgia Hall and Linn Grant are both in the top 20. Overall, Europe has an average ranking of 42.58. Home soil could also help them. The Europeans have never won three Solheim Cups in a row, so this would be a first. They've also won four of the last six. Leona Maguire had the most points of any European player back in the 2021 edition and will definitely be important here. Celine Boutier, who just won the Evian Championship, is also set to feature for Team Europe.
Europe has both experience and youth, which is the perfect mix for a tournament like this. Suzann Pettersen is also one to watch, a seasoned veteran at the Solheim Cup. Hull in particular may be the most electric player in the squad. She could very well end up being the point leader given her recent form, too. Hull was a runner-up in the last two majors and has thrived in various other tournaments as well. The Europeans have a fantastic opportunity to make some history this week.
Team USA is a force to be reckoned with despite losing the last two Solheim Cups. There is so much talent who know what it takes to win, including Lilia Vu, Nelly Korda, and Stacy Lewis, among others. Youngster Rose Zhang is also joining the American squad after dominating the college ranks and winning on her LPGA debut.
The States have an average ranking of 24.42, which is quite impressive. Vu and Korda are ranked No. 2 and No. 3 on the LPGA tour, respectively. Team USA has seven members in total returning for the 2023 Solheim Cup and six players on the roster have won majors before. Not too shabby. While the overall talent of the American squad might be a tad better, Europe does have more depth, which is why they're likely frontrunners. Regardless, the US will be feeling confident with a nice mix of veterans and youth as well. Plus, Lewis is a fantastic captain and has enjoyed boatloads of success in this sport.
2023 Solheim Cup Picks
This is probably the most talented Europe roster ever and I think that will result in a three-peat. Take the hosts to win this weekend in Spain.
