Verstappen in total charge of championship after Monaco win
After winning two of the first four races of the season, Sergio Perez did briefly give us all some hope that he might be about to challenge Max Verstappen for the 2023 Drivers Championship.

Now after wins in Miami and then in Monaco last Sunday, Max Verstappen seems to have put the prospect of an actual contest to bed. All this means it now seems more likely than not, that all we now have to look forward to this year is another Verstappen title procession, like we witnessed in 2022.
In the betting to win the drivers championship this season, Verstappen is now just -1660. He was between -800, and -1000 over the past couple of weeks, but the win in Monaco has resulted in his odds shortening further.
And in fairness, it’s hardly surprising. A quick look at the drivers championship standings after the Monaco Grand Prix shows us that Verstappen is now 39 points ahead of his teammate Sergio Perez. The championship already looks finished.

In the betting to win the championship without Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez is now into -500 after his 16th place finish in Monaco. Prior to that, he had been as short as -800. And even -1000 with some F1 betting sites.
The closest challenger to Perez is Fernando Alonso at +700. Lewis Hamilton is +1200.
What happened in the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix?
In the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix, Max Verstappen came home first in what was a 1-2 finish for Red Bull. This was Red Bull's second 1-2 of the 2022 F1 season. This season they have already had four 1-2 finishes from the six completed races, showing just how dominant Christian Horner’s team currently are.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc started from Pole Position, but ended up retiring after 27 laps. Also on the podium alongside Verstappen and Perez was George Russell, who finished third. For the record, Sergio Perez claimed the fastest lap.
Betting to win the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix
The dominance of the two Red Bull cars is further underlined in the latest betting odds. In the betting to win the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix, Max Verstappen is -240, with his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez next at +450. After the Red Bull duo is Fernando Alonso at +900, with Lewis Hamilton fourth in the betting at a staggering +2500.
The odds on Verstappen to win this race are more in keeping with what he has been in recent weeks. Such is the nature of the Monaco street circuit, the best Formula 1 online betting sites had the Dutch driver at a massive looking +115 to win in Monaco last weekend.
Unfortunately, there is no repeat of those now generous looking odds this week.

Our Spanish Grand Prix betting picks
It pains us to say it, but we have to go with Max Verstappen to win. The double world champion hasn’t finished outside of the top two this season. And we are now back on traditional F1 racing circuits, where he is expected to further dominate Sergio Perez.
Verstappen is also in good form having won the last two races. And with his lead growing in the drivers championship, team orders could now start being applied to ensure Verstappen gets the 2023 World Championship in the bag, sooner rather than later.
So where else can we find some good value picks? Well, in the head-to-head markets, Lewis Hamilton is -130 to finish ahead of his Mercedes teammate, George Russell (+100).
Things have started to heat up in the Mercedes camp in recent weeks, with Russell unhappy about not being allowed to pass Hamilton twice now this season.
So far, things seem cool between the pair. But behind the scenes, Russell must be privately fuming. And it could be that we’re now just one more incident away from a breakdown in the relationship. The latest incident in Monaco last weekend may also see Hamilton keen to lay down a marker and show the young upstart, Russell who the real boss is.
So far this season, Hamilton has made it to the finish line ahead of his teammate in four of their six races. And with his team seemingly favoring him ahead of George Russell, we think backing Hamilton to beat Russell is a good call for our last pick.
