2023 Australian Open Recap

Per usual, it’s been a fun few weeks in Melbourne as the best men’s players tussle for the singles Grand Slam. Before we offer our pick to win, it would be helpful to know how we even ended up here with a recap of the Australian Open.

Let’s begin with Djokovic. Finally putting the drama of not being vaccinated for COVID — which got him banned and deported last year — Djokovic has picked up where he left off: dominance. Djokovic is now at 27 straight match-wins in this tournament, which broke Andre Agassi’s record in the Open Era. The Serbian ended American Tommy Paul’s hopes in the semi-finals with a 7-5 6-1 6-2 victory.

And then there’s Tsitsipas. He needed an all-out effort to survive Karen Khachanov in the semis. The Greek player ultimately prevailed 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 6-3. The win gives him only his second-ever Grand Slam final appearance, the first in the Aussie Open. Tsitsipas had advanced to the last four in three of the last four years at Melbourne Park before his breakthrough this year as the third seed.

Not only will the Grand Slam title be on the line when Djokovic and Tsitsipas collide, but also the No. 1 ranking in the world. That spot currently belongs to Carlos Alcaraz. However, the young phenom missed the tourney with a muscle injury that’s nagged at him since the end of 2022. Whoever wins the Australian Open will become the world’s new No. 1 automatically. Tsitsipas has never had the honor, while Djokovic would complete a comeback to world's best after a turbulent 2022 campaign that saw him banned from multiple events.

Outside of defending champion Rafael Nadal being shockingly upset in the second round, the Australian Open has been relatively tame. Both Djokovic and Tsitsipas have been the clear-cut best players so this finals matchup seems only right.

Best Bets For 2023 Men’s Australian Open Final

We’ll be making two bets on the 2023 men’s Australian Open. In fact, we’ll be parlaying the two together to up the potential payout. You could follow suit, or just stick to single bets for each — you decide. But here’s what way we’re betting before Sunday’s final:

Moneyline

It is not the first time these two players have met in the finals of a Grand Slam, and boy what a game that was in the 2021 French Open. Djokovic have may won that day, but he had to pull out all the stops to do so. It was an epic five-set match of 6-7 (6-8), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Blowing a two-set lead, as Tsitsipas did, is a tough pill to swallow, but also evidence he can hang with one of the all-time greats of the sport.

Sans that epic title game, the players have played 11 other times. In all, Djokovic is 10-2 against Tsitsipas. But on hard courts — such as that of Melbourne Park — Tsitsipas is actually 2-1. Upset potential?

Potential, yes of course, but we’re personally not betting on it. Certainly not at the Australian Open, where Djokovic has dominated as no other player has at it. With one more win, Djokovic would close in on a 10th Australian Open championship (already a record) and 22nd Grand Slam title overall (would tie Nadal for most ever). And like we said earlier, he’s won 27 straight at this event.

So yes, we’re taking Djokovic’s moneyline. Of course, that’s not exactly a bettor-friendly line right now at -475 odds. For this reason, we’re parlaying it with the wager underneath.

Under 37.6 games-110-110-110

Tsitsipas might not win, but we sure don’t think he’ll go down easy. He’s playing too well to be an easy out for Djokovic, who we might add is not exactly 100-percent healthy right now. His left hamstring was heavily taped up last week, which leads us to believe is still an issue for Djokovic. Therefore, we’re taking the over. It wouldn’t shock us if we get another back-and-forth five-set war like last time.
