Two of the most successful nations in World Cup history will square off on Saturday in Qatar as Spain takes on Germany at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. They had quite opposite results in their first World Cup games this time around, with Spain securing three points in a 7-0 win vs. Costa Rica while Germany was upended by Japan, 2-1. Spain entered the tournament as FIFA's No. 7 ranked team, while Germany was a bit behind them at No. 11.

Heading into the matchup, there's not much separating Spain and Germany. Spain (+155) is considered slightly more likely to win than Germany (+175), though neither side has much of an edge. A draw comes in at +240, only slightly less likely than either side to win. The spread is set at 0.0, effectively making this a pick'em situation. The total is set for 2.5 goals leaning slightly towards the under (-112).
Spain Best Bets
Spain began its World Cup journey with a matchup against Costa Rica on Wednesday. After securing a shutdown and totally dominant victory in their first matchup, Spain will set its sights on Germany. Despite a 7-0 win vs. Costa Rica, Spain will have a far more difficult time finding the back of the net against Germany which has a strong defense and some of the best goalkeeping in the world, although the Germans looked vulnerable in their shocking loss to Japan.
Heading into the World Cup, Spain was in strong form, having won six of its last nine games. They had two draws and one loss as their only other results during that timeframe. It's been a long time since Spain and Germany have faced off, having last played in the UEFA Nations League back in 2020. That match went in favor of the Spaniards, who took down Germany 6-0 in a one-sided affair.
This year's World Cup squad for Spain has only one player left from their 2010 championship squad. Sergio Busquets returns for the fourth World Cup of his esteemed career. He's one of the veterans of this Spanish squad that is mixed with youth and experience, which was highlighted on Wednesday with goals from Gavi (18 years old), Ferran Torres (22), Dani Olmo (24), Marco Asensio (26), Carlos Soler (25), and Alvaro Morata (30).
After seeing Spain's convincing demolition of Costa Rica, during which they did not allow their opponent to take a single shot attempt, I have full faith in their ability to secure a win vs. Germany, and at plus odds, this feels like a no-brainer. Following a resounding win with dominant performances up and down the pitch, I'm backing Spain to get the job done again on Sunday. Spain Money Line (+155) is the pick here.
Germany Best Bets
The German side is coming in off a frustrating 2-1 defeat against Japan. Playing in one of the most formidable World Cup groups, Japan was not an easy challenge for the Germans, and they managed to pull off a stunning upset despite entering the matchup as big underdogs. While Germany dominated possession as they usually do (76 percent throughout the match), it was all for naught as Japan was able to make the most of its chances in front of goal.
Second-half goals from Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano saw Germany's 1-0 first-half lead undone. A 33rd minute penalty from Ilkay Gundogan was the only goal for Germany in the loss, who were unable to convert on any of their other 25 shots. Their lack of clinical finishing plagued them, and they'll need to sort that out if they hope to escape the group stages.
Now, Germany turns its attention to Spain, which is coming off its massive 7-0 win against Costa Rica. If they don't figure things out, this could turn into an ugly game for Germany. Prior to Germany's 2-1 loss against Japan, they'd been in inconsistent form but hadn't been losing a lot of games. In their recent set of six UEFA Nations League games, Germany recorded one win, four draws, and one loss. They scored nine goals and conceded seven during that stretch of the schedule.
Both Germany and Spain have talented offenses that are capable of putting up high goalscoring tallies. Only one of those teams showed that to their full capability on Wednesday, however. Still, I expect the lack of success in Germany's attacking third to have its attackers eager to make up for their dismal showing.
Because of that, I believe both teams will get on the board in this game. Spain scored at least one goal in every one of its recent UEFA Nations League games, while Germany was only held goalless one time during that same span. With these two teams capable of finishing in the attacking third, the bet here will be Both Teams To Score at -140.
