Royal Ascot Gold Cup Handicapping
You have your betting account all set up, so now it is time for the most fun part: handicapping the race and picking your horse! Here are the horses with the best chance in the 2022 Royal Ascot Gold Cup:
Gold Cup Leading Contenders
Kyprios is the horse to beat in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. He is trained by Aidan OāBrien, already a seven-time Gold Cup winner. Though he has never gone past 1 Ā¾ miles, he has a full brother who is a G2 winner at two miles, meaning he has upside to stretch out. His two recent wins also prove that he handles good going well, which is key since the turf will be on the firm side Thursday.
His most likely challenger will be the venerable Stradivarius. He has won the race three times already, and though he was defeated last year in his signature race, he comes into the race off of a strong prep race win at York. He has also proven not only his stamina, but his ability to run well over ground on the firm side, something some of his opponents cannot say.
In that vein, keep in mind that Trueshan will likely not run in the Gold Cup if the ground remains good-to-firm, as expected. Trueshan has the class and the stamina of a top stayer. However, his best efforts always come on softer footing. With the ground expected to be so quick on Thursday, his connections will likely route him toward a better spot with the footing he likes.
Gold Cup Longshots
Princess Zoe has a good record of both class and stamina. This mare also tends to find good form over this course: she finished second in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot last year, and she also won the Sagaro (G3) in her final prep for this race. The Sagaro is the traditional local prep. That last-out win came over ground-rated good-to-firm, as well, meaning she will handle the footing nicely.
Tashkhan has not yet proven to be a win candidate against company like he faces in the Gold Cup, but he is a regular placegetter in staying races against the same horses he will face Thursday. Though he is probably best on ground a little softer than he will get here, he is consistent enough to run in for underneath shares even over better ground, and that consistency could pay off.
