2022 NASCAR Season Recap
In order to predict what could happen from now until the season finale, it was would wise of us to recap whatâs already transpired in the 2022 NASCAR season. Thirteen Cup Series races have been run already anyway, with 13 more left in the regular season â followed by 10 in the postseason.
At the moment, Chase Elliott sits atop the Cup Series standings. With 475 points, heâs 52 clear of second-place Ryan Blaney. Rounding out the top-5 are Kyle Busch (417 points), William Byron (415), and Ross Chastain (407). The latter two are the lone drivers to win multiple races this year, with two wins apiece for each.
The overarching story of the entire 2022 season â before, now, and then â is the Next Gen car. Every driver is adjusting to the redesigned vehicle, some with success, others with struggle. The introduction of the car has made the motorsport even more unpredictable than it already was. So far, weâve seen this season produce three first-time winners in Austin Cindric, Chase Briscoe, and the aforementioned Chastain with two victories. Therefore, a winning betting strategy is one that doesnât stick to old performances because the sport has been completely upended in 2022 due to Next Gen.
Though, in the second half of the season, weâll see NASCAR return to popular tracks for the second time in a single year. So in theory, teams and drivers will be more in-tune with the vehicle this second go-round since they have prior experience to base on now. That hasnât been the case in the first half of the season since every track was a first-time showing for Next Gen.
Betting Advice For 2022 NASCAR Cup Series
Betting is not only about who you select to put money on, but also who you donât, which is equally important. Thatâs why for our 2022 NASCAR Cup Series betting advice, we wanted to include doâs and donâts among the top contenders to win. Let's jump right into it:
Do Bet: Chase Elliott
The Cup Series points-leader had an All-Star weekend to forget in Dallas. He crashed out and got a DNF. Thankfully, it was an exhibition race with no points on the mine. Despite the mishap, Elliott remains a wise betting choice the rest of the way.
Elliott is showing a level of consistency with the Next Gen car that few other drivers are. His average finish of 10.4 this season is second only to Blaneyâs 10.3. Plus, as a 2020 Cup Series champion, we know Elliott can win in the clutch. All this makes him a no-brainer bet in the futures category.
Don't Bet Martin Truex Jr.
It's tough to write "don't bet on Truex Jr." â especially after he's finished top-2 in four of the previous five seasons. However, we're going to do so anyway. While Truex is in sixth-place overall, he's rarely ever in a position to win races, as evident by his two lone podium appearances this year (zero wins). Simply put, that's not going to cut it in the playoffs when extra weight is put on those who can cross the finish line first. It's best to fade Truex Jr. in 2022.
Do Bet: Ross Chastain
We mentioned Chastain earlier as one of the newcomers bursting onto the scene with the Next Gen car. But hereâs the thing: heâs seemingly improving as the season wears on. In his previous six races, Chastain has three top-fives and four top-10 finishes. Thatâs plenty of momentum that can build in the second half of the year.
Don't Bet William Byron
While drivers like Chastain are gaining steam, Byron is losing it. Since winning Martinsville back on April 10, the driver has failed to crack the top-10 once. Here is how he's finished during that span in Cup Series events: 18, 15, 22, 13, and 16. That should give bettors a whole lot of pause despite Byron's fourth-place standing. He's trending down and you should avoid him on this futures wager.
