Best Bets for the 2022 Pegasus World Cup

The Pegasus World Cup was first run in 2017, a race as epic as the then-new 100-foot-tall Pegasus and Dragon statue that soars over the Gulfstream grounds. Modern greats like Gun Runner and Arrogate count among the winners. Knicks Go, who won the race in 2021, returns this year for his career finale.

Will Knicks Go become the first horse to win the Pegasus World Cup twice? Read on to find out!

Pegasus World Cup Favorites

Short-priced horses tend to run very well in the Pegasus World Cup. Every winner has either been the betting favorite or the second favorite on the tote board. This year, the clear favorite will be Breedersā€™ Cup Classic winner #1 Knicks Go, who won the Pegasus as the favorite last year and will try to conclude his career on a high note.

He will show sharp speed from the rail, but Knicks Go can be in trouble when one of his foes can match his prodigious early speed. This time, #4 Life Is Good is fast enough to do so, and will have the tactical advantage from the comparably outside gate. And, when Knicks Go does not win, he often finishes out of the money.

This year, back the likely second choice in the market: the aforementioned Life Is Good. He has never run a bad race in six starts, has that top-class miler speed that could spell trouble for Knicks Go, and has the pedigree to suggest that the stretch to nine furlongs could work out well for him. His running style should suit Gulfstream beautifully, and his trainer Todd Pletcher is having an excellent Gulfstream meet so far.

Pegasus World Cup Value Horses

Though longshots do not tend to win the Pegasus, intra-race exotics are a different story. Every year the Pegasus has been run, either one or two horses in the trifecta have been 10/1 or more, and sometimes over 30/1. So, if you like to bet exactas, trifectas, or superfectas, the name of the game is finding those longshots who will run into the top three.

#8 Endorsed has been sprinting a lot lately, but his two attempts at a mile and an eighth have both been good: second-place finishes in stakes races at Saratoga. He has the tactical speed to carve a good trip at Gulfstream, and has never been out of the board in four tries in Hallandale Beach.Ā  On the stretch out from a sprint to a route, he should get a good trip to run into the money.

#3 Stilleto Boy was one of the most fun three-year-olds of 2021, the plucky Iowa Derby winner who kept punching above his weight. After the win at Prairie Meadows he hit the board in a pair of Grade 1 races in California, including a second-place finish in the Awesome Again (G1) at the same distance as the Pegasus. With speed and the ability to run well at many tracks, he should put forth another smart effort.

#5 Empty Tomb is strong at a mile and an eighth; though he has yet to win at the distance, he has hit the board in five of seven starts, a good enough record for an exotics longshot. Though he will not outjump the chalks to the lead, he should be fast enough to get a good forward spot under high-percentage Gulfstream rider Paco Lopez and can keep on for a piece if he holds his recent good form.
